HISTORY OF NEMOCON SALT MINE

The Nemocón Salt Mine is a tourist attraction in Cundinamarca with more than 500 years of history, an underground site of cultural, historical, architectural and scientific interest. The municipality itself, Nemocón, has interesting stories in its heritage, for it was in the fields of Nemocón that the first battle took place between the Spaniards and the Güechas, who were the warriors of the indigenous Muisca tribe. The village was founded in 1600. According to the language of the Muisca Indians Nemocon means Warrior’s Roar.

HOW TO GET TO NEMOCON SALT MINE

The Nemocon salt mine is located in the municipality of Nemocon in the department of Cundinamarca, 45 kilometres from Bogotá. To reach the Nemocon Salt Mine from Bogota you must first go to the Transmilenio portal on 170th Street (Portal Norte). There you will find inter-municipal buses to Nemocón. The journey takes approximately one hour. Then you must walk a few blocks to the mine. Clearly you will not get lost, as anyone will be able to show you the way.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE IN NEMOCON

Nemocón is located in the upper basin of the Bogota River, at an altitude of 2,585 meters above sea level. The approximate temperature of Nemocon is 12.8°C. The rainy season in this region of the country is from September to December. It is advisable to take comfortable and warm clothing as it rains even in the dry months.

ATTRACTIONS IN NEMOCON

Nemocon is a village with approximately 13,500 inhabitants, very friendly people who will make you feel at home. The most representative place in the village is the salt mine, and it is precisely this that makes Nemocon a tourist destination. The mine is an impressive, imposing, but also beautiful place. The attraction of the town is that it is really economical to take a walk and eat there, apart from the charming landscapes you will see in the middle of the journey. Nemocón is also close to other towns such as Zipaquirá, Suesca and Guatavita and from there it is very easy to find a route and continue travelling. As a curious fact we can tell you that this mine has been the setting for various film and television productions.

WHAT TO DO IN NEMOCON?

When you enter the mine you will always be accompanied by a guide who will tell you the history and the heritage that lives on in the mine. First you can enter the Museo NAcional de la Sabana. Inside the mine you will find the Chapel of the Virgen del Carmen and the Camara del Pulpito which are fascinating creations. You must take into account that the entrance to the mine is from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Above the salt mine is the viewpoint Arbol de los Sueños, you can admire a complete view of the village from there.

In this village, as well as touring and getting to know it, you can visit the Tatacoita desert, which is approximately one hour from the village and is a peaceful area that you will be allowed to visit.

In Cundinamarca, at Nemocón you can enjoy the typical breakfast of the region, a delicious potato broth with ribs, chocolate, bread and cheese. At lunch you can delight your palate with a delicious Fritanga, which is a dish full of all types of meat: beef, pork, chorizo, stuffed, chunchullo, accompanied by papa sabanera and papa criolla. And for dessert the typical curd with melao that is prepared by the inhabitants of the village with the milk of their cattle. You definitely cannot leave Nemocón without tasting the curd.
