The name Sutatausa refers to the two indigenous tribes that inhabited these areas at the time of the conquest: the Suta and the Tausa. These lands tell the story of the hundreds of Indians who, after opposing new beliefs and the miserable treatment given to them by the Spaniards, rebelled against them. Many Indians were killed by the conquistadors, but others preferred to throw themselves off Tausa Rock; around 500 Indians committed suicide in this battle. In 1980 the town of Sutatausa was declared a cultural heritage site and national monument of Colombia.
